Why Is Your Home Not Cooling Or Heating Evenly?

Uneven heating and cooling inside home

It is the job of your HVAC system to keep you cool/warm, and comfortable inside your home, depending on the weather outside. You should enjoy the same pleasant temperature throughout your home. If you find that one or more of your rooms are either cooler or warmer than the others, it is a sign of a problem.

A home that is evenly cooled or heated not only feels more comfortable but helps save money as well. So, it is important to figure out the reason why your home isn’t maintaining a consistent temperature in all the rooms. Here are some of the possible causes of uneven heating and cooling in your home.

Aging HVAC system

The most common cause of uneven heating and cooling is an aging HVAC system. Most systems are built to last up to 20 years. The actual lifespan depends on a lot of factors. The systems that are maintained well tend to last longer with fewer problems.

If your system is reaching the end of its lifespan, you will notice that its efficiency drops, and among other issues, it is also unable to maintain consistent temperatures.

Ductwork annoyances

Ductwork leakages can cause uneven heating and cooling. If a part of the ductwork is allowing air to escape, it won’t be able to distribute air properly across your home. This can lead to uneven heating and cooling, and your HVAC system will cycle more frequently.

Another issue with ductwork could be improper insulation. This can also allow conditioned air to cool down or heat up as it passes through the system. So, it is vital to ensure that the ductwork has no leakages and is properly insulated to minimize temperature variations across different parts of your home.

Clogged air filters

Clogged filters can cause several problems for the HVAC system. It can cause the system to work harder and reduce its efficiency. The unit has to work harder to get air into the system, which will result in low pressure, and the unit will end up cooling unevenly.

There are more ways in which a clogged filter can affect your HVAC system. So, it is important to change them regularly as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Improper attic insulation and ventilation

It is important that your attic is properly sealed and insulated so that the conditioned air doesn’t escape outside and the outside air doesn’t enter inside.

However, if there are leaks or holes in your attic or there is insufficient insulation, conditioned air will escape outdoors, and the home’s upper floor will have warmer temperatures. So, make sure the attic has proper ventilation and at least the minimum required insulation.

The heat from home appliances

Some parts of your home may be warmer than others due to constantly running home appliances such as refrigerator, washer and dryer, dehumidifier, over, water heater, and others. These appliances produce heat, and the nearby areas may feel warmer than the rest of the house.

Blocked air vents

If a room is too cold compared to other rooms, try to close one or more air vents in that room. Make sure not to close all the vents as it can lead to pressure build-up in the system.

If a particular room is too hot, check if all the vents are open and unobstructed. Clean the vents properly and remove any obstructions that might be blocking the flow of air.
